Why help Oceanósfera?

Oceanósfera, winner of the 2024 international prize, Ocean Awards, is a non-profit foundation that helps protect the ocean and its biodiversity through education and communication for marine conservation.

What do we do?

Based in Valdivia, southern Chile, we work with children, young people, local communities, schools, and NGOs to promote the care of the ocean and marine life through three areas of work:

1) Educational resources (field guides, books, posters, and activity booklets).

2) Marine environmental education (outdoor activities and school workshops).

3) Marine science communication (talks and outreach).

What are some of our results?

Since our foundation in 2019, we have collaboratively developed  24 educational materials. Our educational resources contain information about little-known marine animals in Chile, such as sharks, sea turtles, whales, dolphins, and endangered animals.

We have distributed 61,000 printed materials to approximately 800 schools, libraries, NGOs, and other community institutions. In the last seven years, 190,000 digital versions have been downloaded from our website, reflecting the  interest in these materials.

In addition, we have collaboratively done 560 environmental education and outreach activities for 36,000 participants, and provided them with our printed educational materials.

Our achievements include the prestigious international Ocean Award (2024) in the category "Public Awareness", recognitions from the Municipality of Valdivia (2025, 2024) and the Ministry of the Environment (2020 and 2021) for Oceanósfera and its founder Dr. Carolina J. Zagal.

What's next?

Thanks to your support, we will be able to continue carrying out more educational and communication activities for marine conservation.

In 2026, we are working on complementary educational resources for our successful new book Sharks, rays, and chimaeras of Chile, as well as new guides, in collaboration with other organizations.
